Festive footwear guide 2026: what to wear for every festival and occasion

For most festive days in India, pick footwear by how many hours you will be on your feet, then match it to the outfit. A flat leather sandal covers kurtas, sarees and most lehengas. A cork sandal or mule suits a relaxed family day and a kurta set. A slip-on espadrille is the closed pair that goes with both ethnic and western outfits. NoStrain groups these pairs for men and women in its festive footwear for men and women collection, and this guide explains how to choose between them, festival by festival, from Diwali to Holi.

Pick by occasion

Occasion Men Women Watch out for
Diwali pooja and family visits Leather sandals for men in black or brown Leather sandals for women in camel or beige You take footwear off at every door, so easy slip-ons win

Bhai Dooj and gifting Espadrilles for men Espadrilles for women Size is the part people get wrong

Match the pair to the outfit

Start with the outfit's colour, then pick the neutral that sits next to it. Black and brown leather sandals look tidy with a kurta and pyjama, a kurta with trousers, or a bandhgala. Camel and beige leather sandals go with a kurta set, a saree in a pastel or a gold border, and a lehenga that has a lot of work on it. If the outfit is already loud, keep the pair plain. If the outfit is plain, a cork sandal in sage green or rose is the place to add colour.

Indo-western outfits, such as a long kurta over jeans or a co-ord set, are where espadrilles work best. They are closed and flat, they come in black, beige, olive, grey and navy, and they do not look out of place next to either a kurta or a pair of chinos.

The festive collection, family by family

Leather sandals

NoStrain's leather sandals for men have a pure leather upper, a genuine suede leather insole, a PU outsole with a zigzag tread pattern, an arch contour and a cupped heel, and the pairs carry the ISI mark. The collection includes dual-buckle, parallel strap and back strap styles and a broad strap slider, in black, grey, brown and olive. The women's leather sandals for women have leather uppers, adjustable straps, a PU outsole and an arch contour footbed. They are listed as ISI marked, and the festive grid shows brown and beige buckle and back strap styles. Leather doesn't like water, and buckles need free hands.

Cork sandals and mules

The cork sandals for men come as thong, parallel and double-layer styles in cookie brown, black, grey, white and beige. The cork sandals for women add sage green and a rose pink and brown. The half shoes are backless cork mules with a PU upper, a cork and rubber footbed, a suede leather insole, a rubberised EVA outsole and an adjustable buckle. NoStrain lists the men's half shoes as BIS certified in sizes 6 to 12, and says they can go with wedding attire and the office. They are backless, so a formal ceremony is better served by a closed pair or a leather sandal.

Espadrilles

Espadrilles for men are lace-free slip-ons in cotton slub, canvas, linen and denim. Espadrilles for women come in natural linen. Several styles list Ortholite insoles, so check the product page of the one you pick. Canvas and fabric soak up colour and water, which makes them a poor choice for Holi.

Fit rules that matter on a long festive day

Wear the pair at home for two evenings before the occasion, and climb a flight of stairs in it. Most festive footwear problems show up at hour five, not hour one.

For sizing, use the size chart on the product page and measure the longest length of an old pair. NoStrain's chart rule for men's sneakers is to size up between two rows, and its guidance for open footwear is the same. For the half shoes, the page advises your regular size for a snug fit and half a size smaller if your heel slips out.

NoStrain delivers in about 4 to 5 working days across most of India and about 8 in the North-East, and offers a 7-day exchange from delivery. The pair goes back first and the replacement is processed after that, so a swap takes a few days. Order about two weeks before the occasion if you want the exchange to be usable.

Festival by festival

Navratri and Garba

Long hours of standing and dancing, often on a ground that is not smooth. Our Garba outfit guide with cork thong sandals covers it in full.

Diwali week

Dhanteras is on 6 November 2026, Diwali on 8 November and Govardhan Puja on 9 November. Bhai Dooj is on 10 or 11 November, depending on your panchang. This is a week of visits, aarti and a lot of stepping out of footwear at doors, so a slip-on or a sandal with an easy strap wins over anything that needs lacing.

Karwa Chauth

On most calendars it is 29 October 2026, so confirm the date and moonrise time for your city. The day is long, the evening is outdoors, and your hands may be covered in mehndi. Flat, slip-on and already worn in is the rule.

Wedding season

Each function wants a different pair. Haldi needs one you can lose. Mehndi and sangeet need one you can dance in. The ceremony wants something cleaner.

Christmas and New Year

December parties run late on cold floors. A closed espadrille or sneaker is warmer and safer on a dance floor than an open sandal.

Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Republic Day

Lohri is on 13 January 2027, Makar Sankranti on 14 January and Republic Day on 26 January. These are outdoor days in cold weather, so closed pairs with socks come first.

Holi

Holi is on Monday, 22 March 2027, with Holika Dahan the evening before. Leather, cork and canvas pairs stay at home, and an old or inexpensive EVA sandal goes out.

What to skip

Skip a new, stiff pair on a day you will spend on your feet for six hours. Skip backless mules at a formal ceremony. Skip very pale colours if you will be on dusty roads. And skip footwear that you can't confirm is certified. NoStrain's explainer on BIS-certified vs uncertified slippers shows what the ISI and BIS marks cover.

Looking after festive pairs

Leather and suede shouldn't be washed. NoStrain advises wiping leather sandals with a soft damp cloth and air drying them away from direct sunlight. Put each pair back in its box after the festival and keep it in a dry place until the next occasion.

Frequently asked questions

Which footwear is best for festive wear?

A flat leather sandal for kurtas, sarees and lehengas, a cork sandal or mule for relaxed family days, and a slip-on espadrille when you want a closed pair. Pick by the hours you will stand, then by the outfit. Short mein: jitni der khade rehna hai, utna aaramdayak aur pehle se pehna hua pair chuno.

What footwear goes with a kurta?

Black or brown leather sandals work with most kurtas for men. A cork mule in black, brown or beige suits a relaxed day, and espadrilles suit a kurta worn over chinos or jeans.

Can I wear cork sandals with a kurta?

Yes. Cork thong, parallel and half shoe styles in black, brown, beige or white go with a kurta at a family event. For a formal ceremony, a closed pair or a leather sandal is the safer pick.

What should women wear on their feet with a saree or lehenga?

A flat leather sandal in camel, beige or brown works with most sarees and lehengas. Check the hem with the pair on before the day. A low wedge adds height without the wobble of a thin heel.

Are leather sandals or espadrilles better for Diwali?

Leather sandals look dressier and suit pooja and family visits. Espadrilles are closed and flat, so they suit an indo-western outfit or an evening out. Neither needs lacing, which helps when you take footwear off at every door.

How early should I order festive footwear?

About two weeks before the occasion. Delivery takes about 4 to 5 working days in most of India and about 8 in the North-East, and the 7-day exchange needs the first pair to be sent back before the replacement is processed.

Are NoStrain sandals ISI or BIS certified?

NoStrain lists its leather sandals as ISI marked and its men's half shoes as BIS certified. Check the product page of the exact pair you are buying.
